Before I became a mother, I was a student. I attended a local community college receiving my Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. I then went on to receive my Bachelor’s in Family Studies. Finances were tight and my fiancé and I were saving to purchase our first home. For the next two years I worked full-time during the week, part-time on the weekends, attended school full-time in the evenings, weekends and online. My last year I added an internship and wedding planning to the mix. I was busy beyond belief, but none of this could have prepared me for how busy I would be as a mother and a wife!
Today, I work as an Assistant Director in a learning center while also balancing a new role of being a mother. I love my job but regret having to work as much as I do. I always feel like I have something to do. Between balancing housework and chasing after my daughter, my days can sometimes be a blur.
I am lucky to have my father-in-law watch my daughter during the day. I feel comfortable knowing that she will get the best attention, and also have time with her cousins. With weekends off, we get to enjoy time together as a family. The weekend is our time to recover from the week and share new experiences with our little one. We recently signed her up for swim class. She enjoys every minute she gets to spend in the water. Without a job, I would not have the luxury of letting her participate in these activities that she enjoys so much. I look forward to getting her involved in many other things and hoping one day that she will decide to love one of them enough to continue on with her passion.
Until then, I will continue to wake up every morning and go to work so that I can continue to provide those opportunities for her. I have no regrets about that!
